New Dad Blog

What really goes through a mans mind when he finds out he’s about to become a dad? Updates following the trials and tribulations, worries, excitement and realisation that in the not too distant future I’ll become a dad for the first time.

27 @ 26 + 1 = Now it’s a porker!

Last week we were told that 25cm at 25w + 1d was on the bottom end of the scale for our baby growth model and although we weren’t concerned, it was suggested we called back for another check up 7 days later.

Todays measurement showed 27cm at 26w + 1d which is now on the upper end of the scale so it just goes to show, the daily intake of 5 x Sainsburys Double Chocolate Cookies really is helping in the development of Pancake.

Another photo shoot

Due to the initial measurement being on the low side, and now we’re on the upper end of the scale, NHS processes and procedures require us to attend another scan later this week to make extra sure that everything is fine.

Like last time, we’ve been reassured by the midwife and once again, we’re not overly worried. To be honest we consider ourselves quite lucky as we get another opportunity to get a glimpse of Pancake and possibly grab another photo or two.

Who knows, maybe this time I’ll be allowed to find out if its a blue or pink pancake!

Grabbed a bargain

Grobag Twin Pack

Grobag Twin Pack (0-6 Months)

During a quick lunchtime browser session, I stumbled across the Grobag Twin Pack (0-6 Months) we’ve been looking at getting and had hope to grab while at the Baby Show yesterday.

The twin pack contains both a 1.0 Tog and 2.5 Tog baby sleep bag which seems ideal for Pancake who is due end of August and over at Amazon it is’ currently £23.99 delivered.

25 @ 25 + 1 = A little on the small side

Apparently, our individual tailored model shows that our Pancake is on the smaller side of normal when considering everything such as age, weight etc.

Cause for alarm?

To be honest, we’re not too bothered considering I’m a porkie and J isn’t so either way isn’t a surprise, but also each midwife has a different way of measuring. The fact we were still in the expected range, just, none of us thought it was anything to worry about too much.

She’s eating healthy (and plenty of it), exercising well thanks to the dog and Pancake is kicking like it’s having its own party at times.

The midwife wasn’t over concerned and managed to find the heartbeat very quickly and was more than happy at its strength, however to be safe she’s scheduled us in fpr another check in 7 days time.

7500 Video Baby Lightshow Monitor

7500 Video Baby Lightshow Monitor

Today the real shopping began. When I say real, I mean brand new items and not 2nd hand deals from eBay.

We’re lucky to have family working for BT so were able to grab a 7500 Video Baby Lightshow Monitor for under £125, cheaper than Amazon!. Video, voice, lullabies, lightshow, temperature… pretty much everything we could ask for to give us peace of mind.

I admit I’d not really thought of BT as a provider of baby monitoring gear. Mention their name and I instantly think of telephones, broadband and BT Sport. Initially we’d been checking out the usual brands such as Motorola, Kiddicare, Angelcare etc but after reading more and more reviews including Which? we found BT popped up time and time again.

Reaching the 24 week mark!

Whoop whoop! We’ve reached the all important 24 week stage and are happy to say that Pancake is keeping us both wide awake with its kicks and punches usually at 5am.

At 24 weeks into your pregnancy, your baby would be considered viable and with a chance of survival if they were born prematurely.

Now we can properly plan

That’s it, our minds are being reprogrammed as we talk!

  • We’ve noticed that while out and about, we’re clocking other peoples prams and buggies – is this normal?
  • Our browser history no longer shows research on far away destinations but instead is full of baby review websites.
  • Our eBay alerts are up and running for what seems like searches for every conceivable baby gadget.
  • Plans are starting to come together for the nursery.
  • We can actually start buying stuff 🙂

Goodbye old life, hello new life

Las Vegas Partying

Las Vegas Partying

Exciting times but my goodness, partying in Las Vegas already seems a distant memory, even another life!

You can tell excitement and realisation has started to set in as I think every day, all I talk about in work is baby stuff!

Let the shopping commence!

20 Week Scan & Baby Sales Galore

So today we had our 20 week scan and I am happy to report that our sonographer reported everything looked exactly as she would expect at 20 weeks. Measurements, heart beat, blood flow, umbilical cord, movement, everything… everything was exactly they would expect at this stage.

A huge sigh of relief!

Pregnancy Corner

Every single step along this crazy journey is yet another milestone we’ve never experienced before despite having tried to become parents for over 3 years.

We’re still not yet jumping up and down with joy and excitement, which is proving increasingly difficult as the days pass by, but the 24 week stage isn’t far away now. At this point I think we’ll be boiling over with bottled up excitement and we can finally let our hair down and finally accept that we’re pregnant and we can’t wait!

Baby Sales Galore

Because we’re new to this, we’re noticing things that would normally slip by – sales of baby goods being one.

The past few days we’ve noticed a huge increase in the number sale events kicking off online – all baby orientated. We’re not sure if this is something that gets recycled every 3 months or so, and so naturally not wanting to miss out on a great deal, we’ve very tempted to go a bit nuts.

Checking a few sites reveals some great deals from Mamas & Papas, M&Co and Asda George and we’re also hopeful that Aldi will have another baby event before Pancake is due.

Easy Like Sunday Mornings

In the meantime our Sunday mornings, when J doesn’t have a shift, are still dominated by “Day 130 in the Pancake Chronicles“, lying in bed reading the latest entry from the Pregnancy Plus app which has been a real eye opener.

It’s a great way to chill first thing in the morning, more often than not with the dog joining us, as we read what expect in the next 7 days. For

All Aboard ⚓

Before the madness of having a child ensues, and the planning, shopping etc, we’ve decided to treat ourselves one last time. Feet up and recharging our minds in what has been an unsettling time with work, we’ll be setting sail as we head off for a week-long cruise and will remain disconnected from the technological world.
